For the 2020 Motion Awards, our friends at Motionographer asked us to create
the main graphic package including opening titles and several event bumbers.

Our brief was to create a piece that would set the mood for the event focussing on 3 elements:
black, white and gold.
We explored the theme of ‘Kintsugi' and combining 3D and 2D elements creating one of our darkest pieces
in the history of our studio.

PHILOSOPHY

2020 turned out disastrous for most of us. The motion industry was not left unscathed.
As deconstructive the year turned out, starting over won’t do the trick. We’re not only reconstructing,
we’re hitting back with reverse deconstructivism.

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver.
As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise.
SCORE REFERENCE

We like our electronic music loud and dark. To honour our heritage we worked with a local producer and chose a track that represented hard style 90s techno, the one that would knock you out at 5am.

EARLY VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

In this early stage we were searching for a digitally glitched, yet organic representation
of the battle between nature's regenerative process and a post apocalyptic virus.

This was a dream project for us to work on & a great opportunity
to create a title sequence with a strong graphic aesthetic.

PROCESS

Most of the shots started as a Cinema 4D / octane render, which we processed in After Effects to add the final touches.

FINAL STYLEFRAMES

Creating a visually arresting sequence, we visualised deconstructivism on a small to large scale. We started out with micro-organisms and worked our way up to fungae, flora and fauna and intergalactic structures.
